Aim of the Course
This course is aimed at those who wish to progress their careers in the education sector. This will enable learning support staff, such as teaching assistants and learning mentors, to:
- further develop their knowledge and skills
- gain a higher education level award
- proceed to further qualifications and training.
Entry Requirements
Entrants to the Programme should normally possess the following:
- Minimum of one-year experience of working or volunteering in an educational setting prior to commencing the course and currently working at least 10 hours in an educational setting.
- Line Manager’s letter of support and recommendation. The letter must confirm that they support the application and will take all reasonable steps to support the applicant’s study, and facilitate the applicant’s work-based studies.
- Minimum of one pass at A-level or 6-unit Vocational A-level, plus three passes at GCSE (grades A–C or 4-9), or O-level (grades A–C) to include English, Mathematics and Science, or National Certificate or Diploma or other equivalent qualifications, such as GNVQ/NVQ or other Level 3 vocational qualifications.
- All students must produce a 500-word piece of work reflecting on their support role in an educational setting which must be assessed by the programme leader.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate that their level of English is acceptable, by achieving a score in a recognised test such as British Council IELTS – normally minimum level 6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in the reading and writing components and 5.5 in listening and speaking.
- Applicants will also need to provide evidence of a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

Course structure
The course is delivered over two years. Each year will give students 120 credits making a total of 240 credits at the completion of the course.

Year Two
- Mentoring and Pastoral Support in Education
- Supporting Individual Needs
- Developing Reflective Practice
- Impact of Behaviour on Learning
- Preparing for Practice-based Study
- Research Project
Assessment
All modules will be assessed through submitted course work. At the end of the course students will receive Foundation Degree (FdA) in Educational Practice.
Progression
Students will be able to achieve a full UK Honours degree by completing an appropriate Top Up course.
